摘要:
Biotechnology complicates existing genotype-environment-management interactions by enhancing crop resistance to environmental stresses. We explored the impact of genetically engineered (GE) traits, weather, information factors, and their interaction on seeding density in the US soybean industry. We derived a seed demand model with a concave yield function and generated hypotheses to test the heterogeneous effects of transgene and environmental factors on seeding density. In addition to the negative price effect, we found that GE herbicide-tolerant traits, unfavorable weather changes during the farming season, and the dominant biotech company’s market share were significantly and negatively correlated with soybean seeding density. Furthermore, transgene-environment interactions significantly decreased the seeding rate reduction effect of unfavorable weather. We also provide empirical evidence that the GE technology decreased the variation among heterogeneous farmers on different quantiles of seeding rates.
