摘要:
This study examines how environmental information disclosure influences scientific research allocation using China's nationwide air quality monitoring program as a natural experiment. Analyzing National Natural Science Foundation project data, we find that pollution information transparency significantly increases scientists' engagement in pollution-related research, particularly green technology innovation, without compromising overall scientific productivity. The research reorientation operates through multiple channels: enhanced pollution risk perception, heightened public environmental awareness, and government policy signals. Notably, the effect varies across career stages and institutional types, with established scientists and research institutes showing greater responsiveness. Our findings demonstrate how information transparency can strategically redirect scientific resources toward critical environmental challenges, offering insights for environmental governance and innovation policy.
